Tunis court postpones embassy attack trial |
2014-01-29 |
[MAGHAREBIA] The trial of salafists implicated in the attack on the US embassy in Tunis was adjourned until March 25th, AFP reported on Tuesday (January 28th). Only three of the 20 accused were present at the trial. The public prosecutor decided last May to appeal the two-year suspended jail terms. The Tunisian government had criticised the sentences as being too lenient. Around 80 suspects are still awaiting trial for their alleged participation in the September 2012 attack. Four assailants were killed and dozens maimed in the violence, which saw protesters storm the embassy and torch a neighbouring American school. Tunisia has accused Ansar al-Sharia ...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active... leader Abou Iyadh of orchestrating the incident. |
