MOGADISHU -- Unidentified militants have fired mortar shells at built-up areas near the heavily-fortified Villa Somalia Presidential compound in Mogadishu on Monday evening, Garowe Online reports.
Mortar shells are said to have landed in an area close to Villa Somalia where Mogadishu-based government offices are situated but no independent sources have verified the casualty figures and whether the target was the presidential compound. Residents of Hamar-Jajab, Hamar-Weyne and Boondheere districts tell that similar mortar attacks occurred in their vicinities, revealing the extent of Mogadishu's volatile security situation. Meanwhile, eyewitnesses reported two deaths and several wounded persons as federal government officials declined to comment on the latest deadly incident. | |
