MPs Demand Dismissal of Kabul Mayor
2014-02-13
[Tolo News] The Kabul mayor has embezzled millions of dollars by misusing his official position and misallocating the Kabul road construction finances, the head of Parliamentary Commission for Telecommunication and Transportation said on Monday.

In an official letter, 80 politicians have called on the president to hinder Kabul mayor, Mohammad Younsas Nawandesh's activities. The letter, addressed to president Karzai, demands the dismissal of Kabul mayor because of his involvement in corruption.

A huge sum of money has been embezzled from the Kabul road construction project and allotment of lands, according to the head of the Parliamentary Commission for Telecommunication and Transportation.

"There are similar road projects in our neighboring countries that are completed with no more than $400,000. Unfortunately, in Afghanistan, a 1 km road seemingly costs $1.5 million dollars," Qais Hassan, the parliament's Telecommunication and Transportation Commission chairman, said.

"We have decided to act upon the decision taken by the house in regard to the dismissal of Kabul Mayor. Up to 80 MPs have singed the letter so we are obliged to act accordingly and send the letter to the president," Irfanullah Irfan, parliament speaker second deputy, asserted.

The mayor, Mohammad Younsas Nawandesh, has rejected the allegations, claiming that most signatures are fake and that some parliamentarians reject having signed such letter.

Nawandesh has said that the allegations were made because he did not respond to illegal demands from politicians.

"Because the demands of those who want to illegally process their documents to build tall buildings and those who intend to establish illegal townships were not met, they are unsatisfied," Nawandesh proclaimed.

The Mayor says that he is ready for trial if the allegations against him prove accurate. He calls upon the judicial organizations to seriously investigate the issue and ensure an enquiry against the politicians if the allegations were found baseless.
