Russia Confirms Death Of Islamist Militant, Its Most Wanted Man
2014-04-13
[Rooters] Russia's Federal Security Service
... the successor to the KGB...
(FSB) said on Tuesday it had killed Moscow's most wanted man, Islamist insurgency leader Doku Count Doku Umarov
... Self-styled first emir of the Caucasus Emirate. Count Doku has announced that his forces will not target civilians, but qualified that statement by saying there aren't any civilians in Russia...
, in a combat operation.

A website sympathetic to the insurgency in the North Caucasus said on March 18 that Umarov was dead but the Russian authorities had not previously confirmed the report.

Umarov's Caucasus Emirate organization has played a leading role in the insurgency aimed at creating an Islamist state in Russia's North Caucasus and says it was behind attacks in Moscow in 2010 and 2011 that killed a total of 77 people.

"As a result of a combat operation, the activity of the head of the terrorist organization Caucasus Emirate, Umarov, was neutralised," Alexander Bortnikov, the head of the FSB, told a meeting of Russia's National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAK).

#11  #9 I just think it is a pity that none of the -stans rhyme with Nantucket.

Head-desk. How'd I miss that month after month? Thanks!

An insurgent of Dagestantasket
Kept all of his eggs in one basket,
Into which, as he prayed,
Putin slipped a grenade --
Now they rattle around in his casket

Meh.

#8  I'm gonna miss that picture of him with the sword through his head. He's been a bad guy for a long, long time. I just hope it was a miserable long time; afraid to ever sleep in one place two nights in a row, no hot meals, no hot showers (well, he probably didn't miss hot showers), no warm women. Always surrounded by other bad guys and never knowing if one of them might be a rat.

#6  48-hour rule doesn't apply. The Chechens announced it about a month ago and named a successor.

Unless he's retired to sunny Birobidzhan under an assumed name with a nice bank account and an 18-year-old blonde 'assistant', we can mark him titzup.

#4  Agree Mike.

The only problem with Zenobiaisms is that they almost always put paid to any snark on a thread. We are not worthy 8^)

#3  ...I'm thinkin' the 48 hour rule applies here, but Zenobia's comment is definitely a keeper.

#2  #1 IMO, only our Zenobia can do justice to this news item.

Vague and uninformative -- that's me!

At Tovarisch Putin's command,
Count Doku has made his last stand!
We may never know where --
Maybe noone was there --
But I bet it was brilliantly planned.
