| Bomb kills three Thai policemen |

| A security team yesterday combed the scene of a blast on Friday that killed three police officers and injured 20. A home-made bomb exploded near a fishing contest in Pattani province. The blast area, at a tent which was erected for police officers guarding the area during the contest, was badly damaged in the explosion. Clothes and shrapnel were found scattered across the area. The bomb was remotely detonated while police guards were having a meal inside the tent. Three police officers died and 20 people were wounded, including eight policemen and 12 civilians. A source said the bomb exploded 200 meters from a stage that had been erected for the contest. It was detonated before Southern Border Provinces Administrative Center deputy secretary-general Piya Kitthavorn was supposed to preside over the opening ceremony. Meanwhile, in Songkhla province, railway workers have replaced 200 track bolts that were missing from the southern line. Border patrol police conducting a security check found the bolts had been removed. Security officials are investigating whether theft was behind the missing bolts or if they were removed by insurgents. Police are giving more credence to the insurgency theory. |
