Yemen launches major operation against al-Qaeda gunmen |

![]() A military commander, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... , said government forces clashed Tuesday with the gunnies in the Lahmar area of the Abyan ...a governorate of Yemen. The region was a base to the Aden-Abyan Islamic Army terrorist group until it dropped the name and joined al-Qaeda. Its capital is Zinjibar. In March 2011, al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula declared the governate an Islamic Emirateafter seizing control of the region. The New York Times fastidiously reported that those in control, while Islamic hard boyz, are not in fact al-Qaeda, but something else that looks, tastes, smells, and acts the same. Yemeni government forces launched an effort to re-establish control of the region when President-for-Life Saleh was tossed and the carnage continues... province. Other festivities took place near al-Saeed in Shabwa province as al-Qaeda bully boyz confronted advancing government forces. Army troops backed by local bully boyz moved last week in to "purge" the towns of Ahwar and al-Mahfad, in Abyan province, and Azzan, al-Houta, al-Rawda and al-Saeed in Shabwa province, another military official said "The campaign will not stop until these areas are purged of al-Qaeda hard boys," the unnamed official added. Yemen has witnessed regular attacks on its troops and other acts of violence, with authorities blaming al-Qaeda bully boyz for the deadly assaults. |
