| Mindanao policeman fights off six NPA militants |

| A senior police officer fought off at least six members of the communist New People's Army (NPA) who attacked him while returning home in Zamboanga del Sur province in Mindanao. Senior Inspector Joseph Ortega said, "Senior Police Officer 4 (Eleazar) Carcallas is a brave policeman who managed to fight off his attackers." Ortega said Carcallas was walking home in the town of Tigbao on Wednesday morning when the six NPA militants apparently waiting for him in front of a store opened fire upon him. Although he was initially injured, Carcallas retaliated with his service firearm until his colleagues who were alerted by the sound of gunfire came to his rescue. This was not the first time that Tigbao has been attacked by NPA militants, the first being in April 2012 when they raided a police station and fled with assorted firearms and other equipment. |
