| #8 I originally read/heard his comment to be more of a (failed) back-handed shot at pro-border-security conservatives ... comparing spending aggressively on border security to "giving everyone there a government job" (i.e., communism) and therefore buying the safety that those border towns are being rated high in. Of course, even the strongest small government conservatives see a role for the feds to do large scale common defense, which is what border security is. So, saying that someone supports that spending and the positive results it brings isn't really even a slam. With that said, I'm completely okay with people mishearing him and thinking he means that the Democrats have proven that communism works ... because I think the average Joe already sees that party's preference being socialist/communist approaches. And that turns this into a "can't believe he just came right out and said it" moment of confirmation. |
