Dozens of students have been taken hostage after militants stormed a university campus in Iraq. They set upon the site by killing the guards and then blew up a bridge leading to the main gate, according to reports. Gunmen from the al Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant group detained the students inside a dormitory. Security forces have now cordoned off the campus.
The attack took place at Anbar University near Ramadi, west of Baghdad.
The attack is the third major operation by militants in three days. It follows an assault on the city of Samarra on Thursday and heavy combat and suicide bombings in northern Iraq on Friday. |
