#7 I have seen pingos up north. They are hills that have been gradually pushed up out of the tundra. When you get seasonal melting, the water seeps down and becomes frozen into an ice lens. As the ice lens grows, it pushes up on the tundra above, forming the pingo through the mechanism of frost heave. If for some reason, the ice lens melts, the top of the hill collapses and you will form a lake. IMHO that would be one explanation of the crater. Another one I was thinking about are methane hydrates: methane locked in bubbles in the ice. If that ice melts, you could get gas that starts exerting pressure on the tundra above, breaking through the layer and causing the crater. Just some speculation. |
