WHO: Ebola Is Modern Era's Worst Health Emergency
2014-10-14
[HOSTED.AP.ORG] The World Health Organization called the Ebola outbreak "the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times" on Monday but also said that economic disruptions can be curbed if people are adequately informed to prevent irrational moves to dodge infection.
It's worse than typhoid, typhus, cholera, and smoking combined.
WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, citing World Bank figures, said 90 percent of economic costs of any outbreak "come from irrational and disorganized efforts of the public to avoid infection."
"Disorganized" is maybe so, but I don't see what's irrational about trying to avoid being infected with a disease that's usually fatal.
Staffers
To whit, bureaucrats...
of the global health organization "are very well aware that fear of infection has spread around the world much faster than the virus," Chan said in a statement read out to a regional health conference in the Philippine capital, Manila.
So we should give the mortality rate time to catch up? That's rational?

#12  My sister-in-law was in NJ for a wedding over the weekend. She and her husband went to The Peasant Grill in Hopewell, N.J. to get something to eat. Who should be there but Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC TV doctor (who violated a self-imposed quarantine. Her cameraman is the one who contracted ebola.) My sister-law-was explaining to my wife on the telephone that they spotted Dr. Nancy Snyderman eating a-bowl-a soup. (This just rolled out during the conversation. You can't make it up. Drum roll?)

The Peasant Grill is famous for its soup. Another stupid true story in the annals of liberalism.

#8  Is it time to drag out my favorite line from
The Masque of the Red Death: "And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all."

#7  I always thought Modern Era's Worst Health Emergency is stupidity of the credentialed classes.

#6  ...This is unpossible. We have been told REPEATEDLY that smoking/obesity/gun control are the
"the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times". Clearly someone is lying about something.

#3  Let me guess the solution: world taxes, less capitalism, free immigration from country to country, socialize all energy production.....

#2  The 'economics' don't matter a great deal if one does not survive the emergency. Survival really is key.

Reassuring to note we've now got the World Bank on the case, or have they been involved from the onset? The World Bank's 'Child Spacing' concept really never has caught on.

#1  "the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times"
I would think global unwanted pregnancies, AIDs, genital multilation(M&F), clean water, famine and ignorance rank pretty high, in modern times.
