#1  "Having an appointment in Samarra," a metaphor for death. Death is both the story teller and central character, according to W. Somerset Maugham. Maugham didn't want to be a lawyer as were many in his family. Instead, he studied medicine and became a sawbones. His passion, however, was writing and he gave up medicine for writing after a successful first novel. Hw worked for the British Intelligence Service about the time of WWI.

Back on topic, a number of militant elements had their appointment in Samarra--titzup dead.
