Pope Slams 'Deviant Forms of Religion' after Paris Attacks
2015-01-15
[An Nahar] Pope Francis on Monday slammed "deviant forms of religion" following deadly attacks by Islamist militants in France last week which left 17 people dead.

"Losing their freedom, people become enslaved, whether to the latest fads, or to power, money, or even deviant forms of religion," he said, laying the blame on "a culture of rejection" which leads to "the breakdown of society and spawning violence and death."

"We see painful evidence of this in the events reported daily in the news, not least the tragic slayings which took place in Paris a few days ago," he said in his yearly speech to the members of the Diplomatic Corps accredited to the Holy See.

#9  If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch,"

So if you tell the Pope his mum's a whore, he will give you a poke? I would kinda sorta think this was exactly what Jesus was talking about with that "turn the other cheek" stuff. And what if (no offense) his mum *is* a whore? Not impressed.

#8  Pope on Charlie Hebdo: There are limits to free expression.

Who's gonna set the limits? The Pope? The Ayatollah? The King of the Soddies?

The pope just lost me.

#7  Hmmmm...I believe the Catholics and Protestants have pretty much buried the swords they held at each others throats [War of Religion/Thirty Years War/et al] for a couple hundred years. The fratricide between Sunni and Shiite seems to be rather active at the moment. Now about 'deviant forms of religion'...

#6  Pope on Charlie Hebdo: There are limits to free expression.

Points to ponder:

The same Sharia that mandates the death penalty for the secular and laicist Charlie Hebdo cartoonists mandates the death penalty for religious conversion from Islam to Roman Catholicism.

Christians sometimes fall to theocratic temptation, trying to play the totalitarian shark's remora.

Leftist Christians collaborated with communist regimes. 'German Christians' collaborated with the Nazis. Now some Christians are tempted to collaborate with theocratic Islam.

The late Christopher Hitchens had some words for these people:
"These people are saying the grandfather (Kurt Westergaard) and granddaughter were the authors of their own attempted assassinations. These are some of the same people who say that if I don't believe in God I can't know what morality is. They've just dissolved morality completely into relativism by saying actually, occasionally, carving up grandfathers and granddaughters with an axe on New Year's Eve can be okay if it's done to protect the reputation of a seventh century Arabian man who heard voices."

#4  Actually the "Protestant inquistion" in England killed far more people than the Spanish one. Forgot about witch hunting: in three centuries the Spanish inquisition killed three thousand people between witches, protestants and people who were supposedly Christians but were practising Judaism (actually this was not punished woith capital punishment. What was punished with death was for supposed Christian being found practizing Judaism, recanting of the "sin" of this "sin", returning to Christianity and being found a Qsecond time ptractizing Judaism). Protestant Europe killed fourty thousand witches (plus a number of papists) in less than 50 years. It was much, much, much better to fall into the dispassionate hands of an inquisitor, hands who were severely restrained by Inquistion's legalistic requirements than in the hands of a bunch of terrified peasnts who had just lost a couple of cows.

So, spare us your feelings of superiority.

#3  Hey Pope, that's what Islam is!

It is explicitly the enslavement (aka submission) of all mankind to a culture of rejection leading directly to violence and death.

Why oh why can't these guys (western leadership) get this??

#1  I enthusiastically support his statement, but I have to wonder how much thought went into the choice of words.
