Raul Castro Says The US Must Return Guantanamo Bay Before Ties Are Normalized

"The reestablishment of diplomatic relations is the start of a process of normalizing bilateral relations, but this will not be possible while the blockade still exists, while they don't give back the territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base," Castro told the conference, according to the Miami Herald.
Champ empties Gitmo and gives it back to Cuba. Laws? Senate? Treaties? He doesn't need them...

#16  Obama is angling for his second Nobel Peace Prize. He wants to seal up a deal with Iran, close Gitmo, and reestablish relations with Cuba. He has already abandoned Iraq and Afghanistan. In the short term, he will have appeared to make the world more peaceful - ignoring ISIS, Boko Haram, and other terrorist "insurgencies".

Of course, after Iran gets their nukes, and Tel Aviv disappears under a mushroom cloud, and all hell breaks loose in the Middle East, the world will be at war. But at least his legacy will be assured.

#7  He might be able to abandon Gitmo, but he can't swing compensation for the embargo. Deals off, Obama gets left holding the bag and looking like the naïf he is. Other possibility Cuba gets GITMO, knows compensation is impossible, relations stagger along a slightly better course, Obama still looks like a naïf.

#6  I suspect he's shooting for a formal handover ceremony to coincide with the RNC 2016 national convention to be held July 18–21, 2016. That gives him a year and a half to repatriate all the inmates and get the U.S. military personnel home. We may even see some sort of Mil-to-Mil [Cuban to U.S.] action committee being formed later this year.

By rhe way, the PX/BX at Balboa has also been closed.

As for returning GITMO, as per OWG NAU iff the Globies are going to be arguing that the

#1  I think we should give Guantanamo to Cuba WITH the prisoners.

Raul and Fidel are not fools, they don't want those kinds running around Cuba...they'll keep them locked up.

I trust Fidel and Raul to be more realistic about Fanatic Islam than the human teleprompter.
