Jordan's Special Forces are some of the best in the Middle East
2015-02-05
There are already unconfirmed reports that Jordan has carried out airstrikes against ISIS in Mosul. Beyond airstrikes, Jordan could further contribute to the fight against ISIS through the use of their extremely effective Special Forces units.

Jordan's Special Forces, grouped under Jordan's own Joint Special Operations Command, is 14,000 strong and is one of the most effective fighting and intelligence forces in the region. Jordanian Special Forces frequently train alongside US forces.

#8  I have been coming to Rantburg for close to a decade now, and still count OldSpooks comments as top shelf perspective. My own info on Jordan is all second hand but it aligns with yours.
Place is located in a crappy neighborhood but things work there at least.

#7   based on the 1970s (the last time they fought)

Jordanian special forces also fought in Afghanistan and Iraq.

#6  I've spent time in Amman, Aqaba and, more importantly, the territory in between. I also have friends who are actively engaged in training there now, and over the past half decade. This is both contract and military liaison missions. I disagree with the skeptical and incorrect assessment expressed above about capability of Jordanian units, at least those I have seen or have heard about by people I know and trust.

#5  As for being pro-Western---Jordan is a toy kingdom who wouldn't last for 5 minutes without British, and later American, patronage.

Lots of 'toys' in that box. Lots of them.

#4  I will wait to decide on this question till I see them in battle. Overall Jordanian military performance based on the 1970s (the last time they fought) is better than other Arab armies but not by much. Jordanian military performance has declined since the British left in 1956.

#3  If you exclude Israel being one of the best special forces in Middle East is like being one of the best bavarian restaurants in Tijuana.

#2  The Jordanian Intelligence establishment is one of the best.

They've to be: 80% of the population are, second-class, "Palestinians" who hate their Bedouin Masters (Hashemites & allied tribes transported from Hejaz by Brits in 1920) more than they hate Israel.

As for being pro-Western---Jordan is a toy kingdom who wouldn't last for 5 minutes without British, and later American, patronage.

#1  The Jordanian Intelligence establishment is one of the best.

They have to be to survive in the ME as one of the few pro American/pro Western regimes in the region.

Methinks ISIS is going to have hell to pay for their grisly execution of the pilot.
