Nawaz Sharif discourages the idea of TV ratings |

[NATION.PK] Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ... served two non-consecutive terms as prime minister, heads the Pakistain Moslem League (Nawaz). Noted for his spectacular corruption, the 1998 Pak nuclear test, border war with India, and for being tossed by General Musharraf... today addressed the Council of Pakistain Newspaper Editors and asked media to play the role in steering the country out of challenges. Sharif said he believes in a free and independent media. "I have profound respect for those journalists who make efforts to protect democracy and the Constitution," he said, adding that for the next two years, channels should forego the race for ratings. Besides praising writers for their part in improving country's image internationally, Sharif highlighted the importance of formulating a code of conduct for responsible journalism. Sharif said that he never understood the purpose behind sit-ins, adding that they badly affected Pakistain's economy. |
