The Nigerian version of al-Qaeda and the Taliban rolled together and flavored with a smigeon of distinctly Subsaharan ignorance and brutality... 's uprising plunged the region into crisis, the area below Lake Chad was part of a powerful Islamic empire, known for religious piety and unity spanning roughly 1,000 years.
