Another first for the world as SA doctors perform first Johnson transplant. |
2015-03-16 |
[INewsnet] CAPE TOWN, South Africa - The world's first successful penis transplant has been performed by a medical team in South Africa on a 21-year-old patient whose penis was amputated following complications from circumcision. The 21-year-old recipient, whose identify is being protected, lost his penis when he was eighteen after it became infected from a traditional circumcision ceremony. Doctors in Cape Town said the operation was a success and that the patient was happy and healthy. The ground breaking operation comes 48 years after Christiaan Bernard performed the world's first successful heart transplant in the same city. There have been attempts at the procedure before, including one in China, but although those operations went well, the penis was later rejected. Some take longer than others, but over time most Johnsons end up rejected. |
