The students from Fatha High School in Herat City apparently fell ill after eating chickpeas from a street seller close to the school's gate, the Provincial Acting Head of the Education Department, Azizullah Sarwari, said.

The boys are aged between 8 and 12.

According to the students, the street seller encouraged them to eat the chickpeas.

"The seller told us to eat and said he would talk to our teachers to also pass all of us in our tests. He said if we did not have money we could take it tomorrow," a Grade 3 student, Mohammad Qasim, said.

Malika Paygham, the acting head of Herat Zone Hospital confirmed that 91 students had been taken to the hospital. They were from Grade One to Grade Eight.
