Austrian court rejects US extradition request for Ukrainian oligarch |
2015-05-01 |
[RFE/RL] An Austrian court rejected a United States request to extradite billionaire Ukrainian industrialist Dmytro Firtash on corruption charges. Firtash denied accusations of bribery and money-laundering during his court hearing. Firtash said that allegations that he had conspired to bribe Indian government officials were "absolutely untrue". A US grand jury in 2013 indicted Firtash, a member of India's parliament, and four others, on suspicion of bribing Indian government officials to gain access to minerals used to make titanium-based products. Firtash was arrested in Vienna a year ago at the request of US officials, who have been investigating him since 2006. Firtash's gas-trading and chemicals businesses prospered under Ukraine's ousted pro-Russian president Viktor Yanukovych. |
