[Gulf Today] Heavily-armed New People's Army militants ambushed and killed two soldiers and injured another on the island province of Samar in the Visayas in Central Philippines.Regional military spokesman Major Amado Gutierrez said the soldiers were returning to their camp on motorcycles after buying provisions in Catbalogan City on Friday morning when the militants attacked along a provincial road in the town of Paranas, Samar. Two soldiers died at the scene, another was injured while the fourth managed to escape.
Gutierrez said, "The soldiers were on three motorcycles. They were in civilian clothes and were unarmed," noting the increase in NPA attacks since the collapse of their negotiations with the government in late 2013.
