Syrian army combats Islamists, reports gains in Hasakah
2015-06-08
[ARA] Subsequent to fierce battles with turbans of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(IS/ISIS), the pro-regime forces regained control of locations south of Hasakah city, northeastern Syria, local activists reported on Sunday.

Hasakah witnessed Sunday the heaviest battles since the beginning of IS offensive on the southern countryside of the city.

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, political activist Abdulsalam Saleh said that fierce festivities took place between IS turbans and the pro-regime forces with heavy and medium weapons amid support of artillery, tanks and the fighter jets ــwhich have played a prominent role in the advance of regime forces.

The source pointed out that the regime's army has made "a remarkable progress" toward the juvenile prison and the power plant (1-4 km south and southeast of Hasakah city) where the festivities centered.

"The army and security forces are planning to launch a military operation soon, under the supervision of Major General Mohammed Kaddour and Brigadier General Mohammad Meyya, to attack the IS group from three sides and regain control of locations seized recently by the group," an official security source told ARA News.

He pointed out that the frequent car kabooms launched by the group caused the delay of the anti-IS operation south Hasakah.

The Islamic State group is in control of major areas in the southern countryside of Hasakah, including the town of Shaddadi which was taken by the group as a major stronghold in the province more than a year ago.
