[CNN] New People's Army guerillas ambushed a military convoy in Kalinga, killing three soldiers and injuring 13 others.Police spokesperson Cherry Fajardo said the troops belonged to the 51st Division Reconnaissance Company and the 50th Infantry Battalion. They were aboard two trucks when an improvised explosive device exploded on the right side of the road.
According to the Kalinga Police Provincial Office, late Monday night the soldiers were fired upon from an elevated portion of the road by a group of about 30 militants. The soldiers returned fire, but the guerillas continued to spray them with bullets. The firefight lasted for nearly a half-hour.
