Obama's joke about a third term had an edge |
2015-07-29 |
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful... leaders Tuesday about his theoretical ability to win a third-term if not for the U.S. Constitution, he was speaking to a group of men notorious for clinging to power. "I love my job," Obama told leaders at the AU headquarters in Æthiopia. "But under our constitution, I cannot run again. I actually think I'm a pretty good president. I think if I ran, I could win. But I can't." It was a message deliberately targeted to African leaders who all too often refuse to abide by their own countries' presidential term limits, most of which were put in place at the urging of Western powers. More than a half-dozen countries have simply repealed term-limit laws to allow sitting presidents to remain. This week, Zim-bob-wean President Bob MuggsyMugabe Octogenarian President-for-Life of Zim-bob-we who turned the former Breadbasket of Africa into the African Basket Case... , in power since 1987, likened the two-term limit to a "rope around the neck" for African leaders. He dismissed term limits as a Western concept that doesn't work on the continent, even though his nation adopted two five-year terms limits in 2013. Of the current leaders of the more than 50 member states of the AU, three men have been in power since the 1970s, four since the 1980s and eight since the 1990s. A third term for the Champ.... not exactly a laughing matter. |

#15 I'm pretty sure amendments get struck down the way they are passed, by the states. The justices have to have nuanced views of amendments because they can't just overturn them. |

#14 But it would take extraordinary circumstances for him to intervene. Like if somebody he doesn't like is elected... |

#13 Also it should be remembered that the Obama administration was adamantly opposed to Presidential term limits and constitutional protections thereof in Honduras. |

#12 Justice Roberts could hallucinate a duly passed tax law in order to save Obamacare. Why couldn't he and four others just conveniently hallucinate a repeal of the 22nd amendment? |

#11 With John Roberts and Anthony Kennedy plus the leftist mindless Marxists traditional judges I am sure they have discussed a way to 'reinterpret' the intentions with regards to presidential term limits. Something like 'Look what great things happened when FDR had an extended stay...' |

#10 JFM: I'm not sure what the Congress wants, or doesn't want any longer matters. A small number of the congressional 'leadership' appear to be making whatever decisions are made based on the guidance they get from the Champ and his shadow govt. |

#9 Besoeker. AFAIK the Dems cannot vote abything since they are minority. I doubt even the most RINO of Rinos would concur. |

#5 The Beest drops out due to illness immediately following party nomination. Dems caught without a viable candidate, vote for temporary delay of presidential election. Supreme court rules election delay is constitutional. Current regime remains on the field. |

#3 Still has time to get one more SCOTUS appointment to reinterpret that amendment along the lines that it doesn't give 'citizens' a choice and thus is struck down. I'm sure the |
