activist was killed and five others sustained bullet injuries during a clash between two groups of Awami League supporters over joining a mourning day rally in Kushtia yesterday, UNB reports.

The dear departed was Sabuj, 23, son of Mobarak of Jhalupara.

The incident coincided with the National Mourning Day, which was observed across the country marking the 40th death anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Witnesses said a group of Awami League supporters brought out a rally from Milpara area around 12 at noon marking the National Mourning Day.

The clash broke out when members of another Awami League group, led by Awami League Kushtia unit's former general secretary Mominur Rahman Momiz, tried to join the rally.

Both groups carried hockey sticks, sharp weapons and firearms, and several rounds were fired during the clash, leaving five people, including Sabuj, Bidyut, 38, and Ajmal Hossain, 28, injured.

They were taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors pronounced Sabuj dead.

Doctors said two of the injured were in a critical condition.
