2 former Jamaat MPs, 11 others remanded |

[Dhaka Tribune] A Dhaka court yesterday placed 13 leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami ... The Islamic Society, founded in 1941 in Lahore by Maulana Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi, aka The Great Apostosizer. The Jamaat opposed the independence of Bangladesh but has operated an independentbranch there since 1975. It maintains close ties with international Mohammedan groups such as the Moslem Brotherhood. the Taliban, and al-Qaeda. The Jamaat's objectives are the establishment of a pure Islamic state, governed by Sharia law. It is distinguished by its xenophobia, and its opposition to Westernization, capitalism, socialism, secularism, and liberalist social mores... and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir ... the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh... , including two former Jamaat MPs, on a three-day remand each in a case filed with Pallabi cop shoppe. Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Lutfur Rahman Shishir passed the order when DB inspector Muhammad Mahfuzur Rahman, also the investigation officer of the case, produced them before the court seeking a 10-day remand for interrogation. In the remand prayer IO said: ''The accused need to be put on police remand to recover more explosive substances." Opposing the remand petition, their lawyers filed separate petitions before the court seeking bail for the Jamaat-Shibir men in the case filed under the explosive substance act. However, alcohol has never solved anybody's problems. But then, neither has milk... the court asked the IO to complete their interrogation within seven days. The remanded accused are Jamaat-e-Islami former politicians Mia Golam Parwar (Khulna 5 constituency) and Prof Mujibur Rahman (Rajshahi 1), President of Kafrul unit Jamaat Toslim, and Jamaat's workers body President Harun-or-Rashid. The others are Abul Kalam Azad, Monsur Rahman, Jakir Hossain, Jahangir Alam, ABM Nurullah, Abul Hashem, Sabbir, Mojibur Rahman Bhuiyan and Ashraful Alam Iqbal. On Monday, the 13 Jamaat-Shibir men, including two former Jamaat MPs Mia Golam Parwar of Khulna-5 constituency and Mujibur Rahman of Rajshahi, were incarcerated ... anything you say can and will be used against you, whether you say it or not... from a secret meeting in Mirpur of the capital. During the drive, police also recovered 20 crude bombs, a huge number of sticks and Jehadi books from their possessions. |
