Iran, Russia to sign S-300 delivery contract real soon now
2015-09-10
A contract between Moscow and Tehran on the delivery of Russian S-300 missile defense systems to Iran will be signed in the near future, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said, Irna reported.

'The negotiations are continuing, the contract will be signed in the near future. All political decisions have been made, there are no obstacles there,' Ryabkov said quoted by Sputnik news agency on Wednesday.

In 2007, Russia and Iran signed an $800-million deal for the delivery of five S-300 batteries. Moscow suspended the deal after the UN Security Council issued an arms embargo on Tehran amid allegations that it was creating a nuclear weapon.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lifted the ban on S-300 deliveries in April, shortly after the P5+1 group of international negotiators and Iran reached a framework agreement over Tehran's nuclear program.

#2  The problem the Russians have is that once it gets out in the world and out from their control, people (Israel, the US, China) begin probing the locations to gather data and maybe develop countermeasures. This is why many older Russian weapons systems came in an export version, with most of the bells and whistles removed (to make it easier to operate, of course).
