Putin's Syria play is a game-changer ‐ which means the West needs to rethink everything |
2015-09-19 |
![]() It will alter the nature of international negotiations, compromise and weaken the cohesion and efforts of the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition, strengthen the Assad regime, and initiate direct Russo-Iranian military operations (suggesting the creation of a de facto Russo-Iranian military coalition, at least in Syria) for the first time. The U.S. and its partners must fundamentally reassess their approach to the Syrian conflict in light of this critical inflection. |

#17 "Rethinking" would presume that Rice/Jarrett/Powers/Obama "thought it out" in the first place. I see no evidence of that Here's what he's thinking: once whitey is cut down to size by Iranian bombs (or Russian bombs with Iranian-refined uranium) things will be better for blacks and they'll be able to throw off the shackes of the Ice People. He's so convinced by the brilliance at which he's carried off Part 1 that he hasn't figured out it's an Underpants Gnome plan. |

#16 The USA & partners should incorporate IQ tests into leader selection process. I don't know if this is the video I'm looking for, I'm doing internet via phone atm. More seriously: you say that as if he isn't evil. |

#15 Putin's interests are in propping up Assad, which makes ISIL a common enemy. Turning a blind eye on the Russians may be justice executed upon sharia. Reap what you sow. |

#10 That means that the West would have to have a leader who is capable of re-thinking everything. Someone who is interested in developing a strategy. Someone who isn't more interested in culture wars and dividing people; someone who's main concern is not turning the military into a rainbow coalition. |

#9 The base at Tartus is what Vlad wishes to protect. From our friends at Wik: Tartus is the Russian Navy's only Mediterranean repair and replenishment spot, sparing Russia’s warships the trip back to their Black Sea bases through the Turkish Straits.[3] Tartus hosts a Soviet-era naval supply and maintenance facility, under a 1971 agreement with Ba'athist Syria, which was—until the second year of the Syrian Civil War—staffed by Russian naval personnel. Most recently, the facility hosts the Amur class floating workshop PM-138, capable of providing technical maintenance to Russian warships deployed in the Mediterranean. The Tartus facility can accommodate four medium-sized vessels only if both of its 100 meter long floating piers located on the inside of the northern breakwater were operational. It is not capable of hosting any of the Russian Navy's current major warships which range in length from the 129 meter Neustrashimyy frigate through the 163 meter Udaloy destroyer, and much less cruisers such as the 186.4 meter Slava class, the 252 meter Kirov class, and the 305 meter Kuznetsov class. |

#8 g(r)om, I hope you're right. Is this part of Zero's "increased flexibility" after the election that he told Putin he'd have? |

#7 Is Putin creating a first line of defense to protect Iranian nuclear infrastructure from Israel? I doubt it. (a) He knows he can't. (b) Not being a self-deluding moron like the rainbow prophet, he doesn't really wants MM to have nukes. |

#1 "Game changer"....? The Russian, Syrian, Iranian troika is nothing new. They've been pals for a very long time. Let Putin have the Syrian sector and wish him well. His resources spent there will mean they won't be available elsewhere. |
