Forces loyal to Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi -- and backed by Saudi-led air power -- have retaken the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait from the Shia Houthi myrmidon group and allied forces loyal to former President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh, a senior Yemeni military official has said. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told Anadolu Agency that army troops and pro-Hadi "popular resistance" committees had reestablished control over the strategic waterway and the island of Mayoun. The Bab-el-Mandeb is the narrow strait -- considered highly strategic -- that separates the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa and links the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden. The military source provided no further information about the operations that led to the waterway's recapture. The Houthi ...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The Yemeni government has accused the Houthis of having ties to the Iranian government, which wouldn't suprise most of us. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews... leadership, for its part, has yet to issue a statement on the source's assertions. |
