| Three Abu Sayyaf militants killed in Basilan gun battle |

| [InterAksyon} A Philippine military unit on a clearing operation in Basilan on Sunday encountered Abu Sayyaf Group militants, triggering a gun battle that left three militants dead, and dozens more combatants injured, among them four soldiers. Captain Roy Trinidad said, "Operating troops of Joint Task Group-Basilan encountered an estimated 50 combined members of the Abu Sayyaf group under sub-leader Radzmil Jannatul at around 11:50 this morning that resulted in three dead bandits." During the gun battle, another group of miltants, led by Katatuh Balaman, joined Jannatul's group, according to Trinidad. He said, "The troops were conducting clearing operations when they chanced upon Jannatul's group. They were joined later by the group of Balaman." Though the the arrival of the second group prolonged the fighting, the milatants finally withdrew after military reinforcements arrived. The militants left behind the bodies of their former comrades. |
