Revealed: The Soviet Union's Space Cannon
2016-03-30
[NationalInterest] However, there was something different about Salyut 3/Almaz 2. It wasn't just a military space station. It was an armed military space station. Almaz 2 was equipped with a small cannon to test whether Soviet spacecraft could protect themselves from American anti-space weapons.

#6  the 'cannon' had, per the article, a barrel measuring 23mm in width, less than 1 inch

maybe calling it a 'gun' would be more accurate

#5  I think Marvin the Martian does it better.

#4  A space cannon is a stupid idea. Not only will recoil screw with your orbit but if you hit you'll send shrapnel all over the place and it'll be a problem for decades. If you miss your projectile will circle around and likely come back to it's point of origin, your own station.

Perhaps the Soviets didn't know this back then but I suspect they did. If they put a canon up there I suspect it had more to do with firing down onto the Earth below. Small rocks could take out a building and would look like asteroid hits. A perfect weapon actually.
