Situation largely under control after Turkey coup attempt by a group of soldiers, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım has said. The press secretary of Turkish intel agency MİT also said the situation was “back to normal” after the attempt that emerged in key state and military buildings in both Istanbul and the capital city of Ankara. “The coup has been fired back,” Nuh Yılmaz said. Soldiers took Hurriyet News Bldg A group of soldiers have entered the Hürriyet building taking several journalists hostage on July 16. [Later] A local person has taken over the live broadcast in the early hours of July 16, saying that the corridors of the building were under the control of the police's special forces. The anonymous local said live that the soldiers who had entered the building were handcuffed by the police. Major Opposition Parties Reject Coup Attempt The two opposition parties have announced their stance against the military coup attempt late July 15 amid news reports that a group within the army attempted to stage a coup on late July 15. “This country had suffered a lot from the coups. We do not these difficulties be repeated,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the leader of the Republican People’s Party (CHP) said in a written statement. He stressed that the CHP will protect the Republic and democracy, saying “It should be known that the CHP fully depends on the free will of the people as indispensable of our parliamentary democracy.” Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli phoned to Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım after news broke, expressing his party’s support to the democracy and free will of the people.

| #3 A rather half-assed coup in the end. I read the coup leader had been purged a couple days earlier and I assume it was done with very little planning. Should have nabbed Erdogan early. |

| #2 Men trying to fight for Constitutional order is out of popular support when you bring despots and foreign fighters in to end it. If you do not like your voting populace, change the populace. I have lots of bad paper on Erdogan. He took their good Commanders away and they don't like this. His first obligation if he stays in control is Mercy for those opposed. What you have now is a Nation's choice to be chaff instead of Wheat and at least the defining line will be there now. If I cannot tell who is on which team, this makes it so much less murky. Egypt chose wisely. They have an up-hill battle. But are good upstairs so to speak. Turkey wants to turn dark, good downstairs so to speak. The Jury is still out. |
