THE H-BOMBS IN TURKEY

Not clear who posted this. I'm letting it through so that one can read the pearl-clutching of the NewYorker. I have no way of verifying the claims made by the author; perhaps some of our readers with more insight can comment (without giving away the nuclear football, of course). But a big dash of salt is required, I think.

#6  My Recon Platoon (HHC 8ID) had security responsibilities for the 549 ADM company, 130 Engr Bde.

The Turks did not want us taking the tactical stuff away and they were even more pissed that we came uninviting making a near tactical air mobile assault on the weapons storage area. They had tanks, we had laws, they had M2s we had M60s, we were out gunned and out numbered but cooler heads prevailed when a Turkish General that spoke good English arrived on the scene and sent the Turkish tanks home. I really thought I was a dead man. My little platoon was TOE to scout, recon, ambush, and harass not stand and fight...

#3  Got into a dust up with the Turkish Army over those things.

Turkey and Cyprus got into it in 1974 (I think, its been awhile), and I was sent in with an ADM team to evacuate the really nifty stuff, the tactical nukes that were easily transportable. Seems our intell guys were afraid the Turks wanted to up the ante on Cyprus and we didn't want a "made in USA' label on whatever happened.

I'm surprised we didn't get those things out of there years ago. The Turks would love to make a donation to the cause.

#2  Turkey does not have F15

#1  Although Incirlik probably has more nuclear weapons than any other nato base, it does not have any American or Turkish aircraft equipped to deliver them. The bombs simply sit at the base, underground, waiting to be used or misused.

I think that unlikely. And wikipedia confirms that Turkey has F15s which can deliver it. What Turkey doesn't have is longer range bombers.
