Tatar songstress apologizes for video filmed at mosque

[RFE/RL] Famous Tatar singer-dancer Rezeda Ganiullina has apologized after Russian Muslims condemned a recent video of hers that was filmed on the grounds of a mosque. The deputy mufti of Tatarstan, Rustam Batrov, said on September 23 that no probe will be launched against the singer because she officially apologized and removed the video from social networks.

In the video, which is still on YouTube, a scantily clad Ganiullina sings a song and dances near the White Mosque in the ancient city of Bolgar. The video sparked an outpouring of criticism by Muslims, who said they will file a lawsuit against the songstress for insulting their religious feelings.

Russia's Investigative Committee earlier said that it had begun investigating the video to find out if it was a violation of the freedom of religion.

#1  Freedom of Religion used to mean the freedom of an individual to pursue the religion of his/her choice, without interference from the state. Now it means the freedom of the state to prevent the free expression of religion at the behest of a dominant religious group.
