Trump Names Haley, A Foreign Policy Novice, As Envoy To U.N.
2016-11-24
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla./WASHINGTON (Reuters) ‐ Donald Trump on Wednesday named South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a former critic with little foreign policy experience, to be the next U.S. ambassador to the United Nations at a time of uncertainty over America’s international role under his presidency.

Haley, one of two women chosen so far for a job in Trump’s Cabinet, is "a proven dealmaker, and we look to be making plenty of deals. She will be a great leader representing us on the world stage," the Republican president-elect said in a statement.

The 44-year-old daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley represents what some Republicans hope could be the new face of their party: a younger, more diverse generation of leaders.

Haley took Trump strongly to task during the presidential campaign over his harsh rhetoric about illegal immigration and for not speaking forcefully enough against white supremacists.

Trump has chosen mostly male conservatives so far for senior positions as he shapes his administration following his victory over Democrat Hillary Clinton in the Nov. 8 election. Trump takes over from Democratic President Barack Obama on Jan. 20.

Also on Wednesday, a spokesman for former Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said Trump had not offered the retired neurosurgeon the post of housing and urban development secretary, disputing a Wall Street Journal report, which the newspaper later corrected.

"Trump did not make an offer," Carson spokesman Armstrong Williams told Reuters. "He asked him to consider HUD. Nothing has been offered and no decision has made."

The Journal, citing two people familiar with the deliberations, also reported that Trump was expected to pick billionaire investor Wilbur Ross as commerce secretary.

In a video message released ahead of the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Trump said he hoped the holiday would be an occasion for Americans "to begin to heal our divisions" following a "long and bruising political campaign."

"Emotions are raw and tensions just don’t heal overnight," Trump said. "Now begins a great national campaign to rebuild our country and to restore the full promise of America for all of our people."
Reminds me of the time I gave a Commercial bank the big FU - sent my least-experienced employee over with a check to pay off my (final) loan. Maybe this is the "Trangle?"

#10  I hope that she was offered the job with the understanding that her primary goal was to get USA share of UN financing in line with representation.

#9  If she does even remotely well, she'll be well positioned to go after Lindsey Graham's seat.

I'm kind of hoping she goes after Trump's seat 8 years hence.

#8  Yea, but - for a Governor, isn't ambassadorship (especially to UN) a bit of a demotion?

#7  The Jerusalem Post points out she was the first governor to sign an anti-BDS bill into law. Also she is the child of not just Indian but Sikh immigrants, and was not an enthusiast for Trump the candidate, but believes it important to support the president.

#6  Bolton would probably make himself available to her to help her figure out how the place works.

Excellent idea! I recommend desks facing one another, with Darth Bolton given free hand and pistol.

#4  She could use a session or two from Trump on the 'care and disposal' of the NY media. You don't exist to fill their Sunday morning schedule.

#3  UN Ambo Samantha Power along with three other feckless losers, soon to be unemployed.

#2  ....As Governor (Ambassador-designate) Haley works just a few blocks down the road from me, let me make a few comments:

- She's VERY well regarded here in SC.
- One tough and smart lady.
- Has kicked a big hole in the 'good ol' boy'
network down here.
- Unashamedly and unabashedly loves her country (Unlike the current office holder)
- Underestimated at one's own peril.

On the other hand, the President-elect has made a smart call -

- She's female, minority, and the child of an immigrant family.
- She's now IN the administration, and that's just taken her out as a possible primary threat in '20 in the event things go south.
- If she does even remotely well, she'll be well positioned to go after Lindsey Graham's seat.
