Dutch dump e-vote over hacking |
2017-02-04 |
[OMANTRIBUNE] All ballots in the Netherlands’ March 15 national elections will be counted by hand in order to guard against the possibility of automated tallying systems being hacked, RTL News reported on Wednesday, citing a potential threat from Russia. The broadcaster quoted Interior Minister Ronald Plasterk as saying that there was a chance the elections could be hacked and that there were indications that some parties, "for example the Russians", could be interested in the Dutch electoral process. "For the coming elections we should fall back on good old paper," he said. Thirty-one parties have registered to take part in the poll by submitting their lists of candidates on Monday. |

#4 Abu, decentralization is better. Remember anyone can make a mistake but it takes a computer to really screw things up. Hack the computers and you can steal all the votes. If it's paper and people you can only get a few. Paper ballots are recountable and can be examined bits in a machine? Not so much. |

#3 You gotta worry about who counts the votes just like you gotta worry about who programs the computer but it's probably easier to watch the vote counters. |

#2 I expect the recent voting irregularities investigation directed by POTUS may make a similar recommendation. I'm certainly not against technology, but not everything needs to be fully automated. Like 3dc said, it just makes sense. |
