| Two Malaysian captives rescued from Abu Sayyaf |

| [Gulf Today] Two Malaysian sailors held hostage by the Abu Sayyaf for the past eight months have been rescued on the island province of Sulu. Military spokesperson Jo-Ann Petinglay identified the Malaysians as Tayudin Andot and Abduramin bin Sumas. She said the two, who appeared "weak and sickly," were among the five crewmen of a Malaysian tugboat abducted by the Abu Sayyaf off the Malaysia’s island state of Sabah in July 2016. Members of the elite Philippine Navy Marines launched an operation at dawn on Thursday after receiving information that the two hostages were seen in the company of about 30 militants in a mangrove swamp on Pata island off Sulu. Petinglay said, "The extremists abandoned the two hostages and fled without firing a shot when they saw the Marines approaching." |
