Somaliland Wants To Make One Thing Clear: It Is NOT Somalia
2017-05-31
[NPR.ORG] They'd have a better chance if they changed their name to Hargesia or something. Take away Somaliland and Puntland and the remainder of Somalia becomes the Ethiopian Riviera.

#11  The name "Detroit" may be available soon. Again, as with "Chicago", there are certain... associations. But come on, you're being mistaken for Somalia, fer cripes sake!

#10  avoid "Chicago". The term conjures up an image of violence-wracked streets

#6  Can't imagine what could have possibly gone wrong to have led to such chaos and warring.

[sarc off]

"Yet, by one of those twists of fate that occurred so often during the Scramble for Africa in the nineteenth century, The Somali nation was carved up into five separate territories. The French occupied French Somaliland, a bleak enclave of lava-strewn desert surrounding the port of Djibouti at the southern entrance to the Red Sea which they wanted as a coaling station; the British acquired northern Somaliland, initially to ensure that the British garrison at Aden was kept regularly supplied with meat; the Italians established themselves in the Italian colony of Somalia, with a capital at Mogadishu. Further south, Somali communities were incorporated within the boundsaries of the British colony of Kenya; and to the west, on the Ogaden plateau, after Emperor Menelik extended the borders of the empire in the late nineteenth century, they came under Ethiopian jursisdiction."

#5  The Northern and Southern Tribes have been at war since African independence in ~1954. The Southern half allowed over a million Northern people to starve shortly there after. Different religions and tribes. If you are really interested read the following book. After reading it I gained a great respect for Mandela.
