#5  ...maybe, but corporate culture of the in house 'suits' was unable to adapt. Nothing different than the 70s oil embargo that allowed Americans to discover relatively less expensive, fuel efficient, quality, 'sold as' Japanese cars. When the foreign companies captured 30 percent of the market, Detroit got the SAOD moment, they just lingered on for a couple decades before the bailout. As someone said - adapt or perish. Any Encyclopedia Britannic salesmen knock on your door recently?

#4  I think Amazon was the death of Sears. Sears had the catalog business but got crushed by Amazon (which is really just a catalog business), because margins aren't large enough to overcome the 5-10% edge Amazon held by not having to collect sales taxes. So in effect government picked Amazon to win.

#3  That used to be Canada's largest retailer.
As for US operations and living maybe 10 miles from Sears Hoffman Estates HQ, I have been waiting for the shoe to drop for a decade now.
The only presence that might be left would be an online direct marketing outfit, not unlike they and Monkey Wards originally were.

#1  ...This is probably the overture - the really bad news about Sears USA will show up around Labor Day.
