[AlAhram] Riot police stepped in to break up clashes among some 100 African migrants armed with sticks and rocks in the northern French city of Calais on Saturday, local police said, following similar brawls the night before. The fighting pitting Eritreans against Ethiopians left 16 migrants injured and around 10 have been arrested, police official Etienne Desplanques told AFP.

Security forces used tear gas to break up Friday's brawls, according to deputy mayor of Calais Philippe Mignonet.

Analysis: Rome mayor's anti-migrant stance signals a shift to the right for the Five Star Movement
22 June
[TheLocal.it] Rome mayor Virginia Raggi has dramatically changed her tune on migration in recent weeks, in a shift to the right echoed by the Five Star Movement party's leader Beppe Grillo. The shift gives an insight into how both party politics and the migrant situation in Italy's cities have changed over the past year, writes migration researcher Nando Sigona.

The letter to the ministry is seen as part of a strategic alignment of the M5S towards more traditional right-wing politics. Other signals of this shift include migrants with insecure legal status being forcibly evicted from squats, tougher anti-begging measures introduced in Rome and a call by Beppe Grillo for Roma camps to be closed down.

Switzerland looks to tighten anti-terror laws
22 June
[TheLocal.ch] The Swiss federal government has launched a period of consultation on proposed new legislation that would toughen penalties for terrorists and those supporting terror organizations. The measures will replace the current temporary ban on terror organizations including Al-Qaida and Islamic State with new, more specific, legislation making it a criminal offence to recruit people for a terror group, receive terrorist training or travel abroad for the purposes of terrorism.

According to intelligence figures up until this May 65 people have left Switzerland to join terror groups abroad, with an additional 23 unconfirmed cases, said news agencies. Among those 23 are thought to have died and an estimated 14 have returned.

[TheLocal.ch] The 30-year-old Swiss resident, of west African origin, was arrested after he shouted the phrase – meaning ‘God is greatest’ – at the Bessières metro stop at around 1.30pm, causing panic among people using the M2 metro line.

“We wondered if we were going to hear an explosion behind us,” said the witness. Several people then called the police.

Interviewed by the authorities, the man said he was having a paranoid episode and was calling upon God to help him, reported 24 Heures. Charged with making threats causing public alarm, the man has been released from custody pending a hearing. Examined by a doctor, he was judged to be neither a flight risk nor a threat, said the paper.

Norwegian Muslim plans liberal mosque in Oslo
20 June

[TheLocal.no] A new, gay-friendly mosque planned in Oslo will allow female imams and men and women praying together. The mosque, which will be located in the centre of the Norwegian capital, will be called Masjid al-Nisa’ (The Women’s Mosque), reports media Vårt Land. Via the organisation Skeiv Verden (Offbeat World), Thee Yezen al-Obaide has also set up an informal network for gay Muslims in Norway, he said. The project is still in its initial stages, but its founder said he hopes to be able to open the mosque next year.

A liberal mosque with a similar taboo-breaking concept opened last week in Berlin, with a female imam and women and men praying side by side. Scandinavia's first female-led mosque held its first Friday prayers in Copenhagen in August 2016. Unlike al-Obaide’s and the Berlin mosque, the Mariam Mosque in Copenhagen is open only to women.

China, the United States, Canada, Germany, Belgium and Denmark are currently the only countries with female imams.

Ramadan prayers at Catholic site spark controversy in Granada
13 June
[TheLocal.es] At sunset on Saturday evening dozens of Muslims from across Spain’s southern city of Granada gathered in a park in the city and prayed together before breaking their daily Ramadan fast.
The gathering was sanctioned by authorities at City Hall and welcomed by the Socialist mayor Francisco Cuenca as an act demonstrating Granada as a “city of co-existence and tolerance”. But the chosen place for the prayers – in the Jardines del Triunfo – provoked outrage from some quarters because it is the site of a Virgin Mary statue that is revered by Roman Catholics in the city.

"Mr. Paco Cuenca confuses tolerance and religious respect with provocation. Call for Muslim Prayers at the Virgin of Triumph ??" tweeted Luis Salvador, an MP from Ciudadanos party representing Granada.

Granada was the seat of Islamic rule for almost eight hundred years until the reconquest under the Catholic King Fernando and Queen Isabel in 1492
