Saudi soldier killed, three wounded in explosion: State Media
2017-07-05
[AlAhram] A Saudi soldier was killed and three were maimed when suspected bandidos Death Eaters attacked their convoy in eastern Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, the interior ministry said on Tuesday, the latest in a series of attacks in the troubled region.

The town of al-Awamiya, located in the oil-producing al-Qatif province, is a flashpoint between the Sunni Moslem government and minority Shia complaining of discrimination.

The soldier was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade in the old part of the town known as al-Musawara and an investigation was underway, the ministry's front man told state news agency SPA, but gave no further details.

Authorities have been bulldozing al-Musawara, a small part of the town with narrow streets which date back more than 200 years, to make way for a new project. Local officials say wanted bandidos Death Eaters believed to be behind attacks on security forces have been using the narrow streets to escape arrest.

Last month, a Saudi soldier was killed and two members of the security forces were maimed when an bomb went off during a patrol in the same area.

Saudi Shia complain of marginalisation in the birthplace of Islam, which follows the rigid Wahhabi Sunni school that views the minority sect as heretical. Saudi authorities deny the accusations.

Qatif has seen protests for more rights for Shia and these have become more frequent since Nimr al-Nimr, a Shia holy man convicted of involvement in violence, was executed a year ago.
A slightly different take on events from An Nahar:
A Saudi policeman was killed Tuesday and three others injured by an bomb in a flashpoint Shiite-dominated city, the interior ministry said.

The coppers were on patrol in the early morning in the Qatif area in Soddy Arabia's Eastern Province when the device blew up, the ministry said, calling the incident a "terrorist" attack.

On June 11 a homemade bomb killed a senior policeman and maimed two officers in Qatif. That blast came almost two weeks after a car went kaboom! in the restive district killing its two occupants. The interior ministry said the pair were wanted suspects.

Eastern Province, where most of Saudi Arabia's Shiite minority live, has been rocked by unrest since 2011.

Authorities have blamed the unrest on "terrorists" or narcos.
