ICAN has been at the forefront of pushing for an end to the use of nuclear weapons through the United Nations ...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense... Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which has 50 signatories including Brazil, South Africa and Vietnam to date. The Nobel committee cited ICAN's efforts "for its work to draw attention to the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of any use of nuclear weapons, and for its groundbreaking efforts to achieve a treaty-based prohibition on such weapons", in an announcement in Oslo, Nowary on October 6. ICAN Executive Director Beatrice Fihn told news hounds that given the current political atmosphere around the world, the call to ban nuclear weapons is more imperative. "The treaty is meant to make it harder to justify nuclear weapons, to make it uncomfortable for states to continue the status quo, to put more pressure on them," she said. | |

| #4 Some of the more recent recipients have dimished the value of this award. I wouldn't be surprised to see Bill Ayers or Jerry Sandusky as one of the future recipients. |
