The Bigmouth Tradition of American Leadership
2017-12-30
[VictorHanson] To everything, there is a season.

America has always enjoyed two antithetical traditions in its political and military heroes.

The preferred style is the reticent, sober, and competent executive planner as president or general, from Herbert Hoover to Gerald Ford to Jimmy Carter.

#5  Two points:

1) Eisenhower: As his Presidential papers are declassified, we are discovering President Eisenhower had a hidden talent - he spotted small problems and prevented them from becoming big ones. He didn't have to handle many crises because he the crises never arose in the first place.

2) Patton's sure-handedness stemmed from his knowledge of weapons and tactics. Whenever he stopped at an American position, he would check out the machinegun and antitank positions. It is easy to be decisive when you have a solid grasp of the details.

On the other hand, he tended to ignore logistical matters, thereby ensuring that his troops would run out of gasoline in front of the enemy.

#4  All (true) morality is based on reciprocity - only an idiot (like Bush II or any other Pub Pol) can be polite to screaming, feces trowing, bandar-logs of the "cognitive elites".

#2  First rule of law warfare - win. Winners get to write the history as well. BTW, there was no Geneva Convention the time of the American Civil War. Yet they only hung one of the Southern officers after the end, commandant of the Andersonville prison camp.

#1  Lots of war criminals cited in that article: LeMay, Sherman, Grant, Lincoln. They would have hung...should have hung. So much for the Lieber Code or Geneva Conventions. Guess it helps to be on the winning side.
