Russia reportedly jamming US drones in Syria |
2018-04-10 |
![]() Four US officials told NBC News that Moscow was concerned that the US would retaliate for the attacks in rebel-held eastern Ghouta, so it began jamming the GPS systems of some smaller drones. Todd Humphreys, chief of the Radionavigation Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, said blocking or scrambling a drone’s reception of signals from GPS satellites can be quite simple. "GPS receivers in most drones can be fairly easily jammed," said Humphreys, who warned that jammed drones may malfunction aand even crash. "At the very least it could cause some serious confusion" for the drone operator if the unmanned aircraft reports an incorrect position or is lost, he told NBC News. American analysts first noticed the Russian military jamming drones in eastern Ukraine after the invasion of Crimea four years ago, Humphreys said. The jammers "had a pretty significant impact" on UN surveillance drones, which were grounded for days after gathering intelligence from the air. |

#10 A caravan arrives one day From snowy land of spammers, Its camels bearing many sacks Of rusty scythes and hammers, And such a song and dance is seen That each Mohammed clamors, "By Allah, I need better drones And lotsa Russian jammers!" |

#9 What happens if you release a flock of cheap, jam-homing kamikaze drones? |

#8 Syria is a complex battlespace. The U.S. would be retards to believe that their drones would work in that space. Put an F-18 into the space, and no one would fuck with that. But put in some dopey drone -- yah that is our bitch. Just shut up and fix the U.S. encrypted comms. |

#7 If a drone gets jammed up it needs to fail over to a pre loaded program that will lead it to strike a target area, if that is the mission, or that will bring it back home without guidance. |

#6 Yep. Jammers are noisy fuckers that our anti-radiation missiles would tear to shreds. |

#5 I wonder if the AGM-88 can be tuned to attack the jammer? Unlike a GPS omnidirectional antenna, the HARM should be able to focus on a point emitter. |

#4 So we are definitely no longer fighting just ISIS. Its now going to be the Ruskis, Iran's Mad Mullahs, the Turks, and Pencil Neck. Now I understand Trumps wish to leave it all to them. Except the Saudi's would be next with support for Yemen. |

#3 I feel that the ability to jam drones is too much of an advantage to reveal in piss-ant, brush war - but maybe I'm wrong. |
