Along the border, emotions are high over Trump's order to send in the National Guard
2018-04-11
[Desert Sun] In southern Imperial County, opinions on President Donald Trump's plan to send the National Guard to the United States-Mexico border are as divided as the tall fence separating the two nations. Governor Jerry Brown is still reviewing the president's request, which some in this region say could help increase safety in the region; others worry it will inflame tensions between the two nations.

In El Centro, the largest city in the Imperial Valley, several customers said they supported the idea.

"We only live 11 miles from the border, so you don't really want to take any chances," said longtime resident Steve Trease. He said he worked for U.S. Customs and Border Protection for more than two decades.

In a presidential memorandum issued last week, Trump ordered the Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon to develop a plan to tighten security along the southern border. He also called on governors of southwestern states to send National Guardsmen to the border.

Trump said the country's security is threatened by illegal drugs, gang activity and extensive illegal immigration. The number of people caught trying to illegally cross the Mexican border last year was the lowest since 1971, according to Homeland Security.

The order came less than a week after Trump ranted on Twitter about a caravan of more than a thousand Central American migrants that was making its way through Mexico.

#19  Pretty certain National Guard Units or California Guard units would not follow Governor Brown order to fire upon American troops. Most folks join the military because they are proud of their country, the types that are not, are weasels that wouldn't pop their heads up in a crisis.

#18  400 guard will be used throughout the state, not necessarilly against illegal immigration.

#17  California's governor agrees to deploy 400 National Guard troops at Trump's request:

"Dear Secretary Nielsen and Secretary Mattis:

Pursuant to your request, the California National Guard will accept federal funding to add approximately 400 Guard members statewide to supplement the staffing of its ongoing program to combat transnational crime. This program is currently staffed by 250 personnel statewide, including 55 at the California border.

Your funding for new staffing will allow the Guard to do what it does best: support operations targeting transnational criminal gangs, human traffickers and illegal firearm and drug smugglers along the border, the coast and throughout the state. Combating these criminal threats are priorities for all Americans – Republicans and Democrats. That’s why the state and the Guard have long supported this important work and agreed to similar targeted assistance in 2006 under President Bush and in 2010 under President Obama.

But let’s be crystal clear on the scope of this mission. This will not be a mission to build a new wall. It will not be a mission to round up women and children or detain people escaping violence and seeking a better life. And the California National Guard will not be enforcing federal immigration laws.

Here are the facts: there is no massive wave of migrants pouring into California. Overall immigrant apprehensions on the border last year were as low as they’ve been in nearly 50 years (and 85 percent of the apprehensions occurred outside of California).

I agree with the Catholic Bishops
[points for loathsome use of "Catholic Bishops" (useful idiots)] who have said that local, state and federal officials should “work collaboratively and prudently in the implementation of this deployment, ensuring that the presence of the National Guard is measured and not disruptive to community life.”

I look forward to working with you on this important effort.

Sincerely,

Edmund G. Brown Jr."

Well, the Border Patrol bigwigs have indicated that the NG will be mostly engaged in border monitoring duties. Not sure how this needle will be threaded, but it will be. Either that or there will 400 sets of BDU's on KP, vehicle maintenance, etc.

#16  I go by a national guard facility every day. Two days ago over 100 guard in full fatugues were boarding a large charter bus to the border.

These young people are having to do this because DC is a worse mess than the border.

#15  I think that given the fiscal disaster that is the state budget, Trump should just freeze all of the federal funds for programs in California as well as freeze all federal funded construction...except for DoD work at the few military bases left in California (Thank you DiFi)

#14  The entire state should be posted OFF LIMITS.

#12  The pollsters that say the Democrats have a chance to take over Congress are the same one that have telling the Democrats what they want to hear for years. They are the same ones that said Hillary would win. Brown will count on the Dems taking Congress and end up with the US Marines in Sacramento.

#11  What if the Dems take over Congress? Maybe that's what Moonbeam is waiting for?

#10  See the source image

Most people voted for Trump's message in 2016 despite what Jerry Brown thinks. Even some in CA supported Trump's agenda. Most people are tired of "Open Borders" and all that it brings with it: drugs, illegal immigrants, and human trafficking. According to the map, most people want to maintain our sovereignty rather than sell out to the UN, Soro's crowd and the globalists.

#9  well.... isn't that an interesting scenario. Emperor Moonbeam I calls out the Palace Guard to fight off the evil Trumpian hordes....

I recommend holding the mounted detachments in reserve. Only because I like horses.

#7  California is one of the states that maintains its own military units that aren't Guard units, so they could use them instead of the guard to avoid Trump nationalizing the guard.

But if he did, and the went against the state units, there would be a war.

#6  As I recall, the Guard can be "nationalized", removing it from State control. Of course, then we'll see how far the rot has gone in the Guard.

#5  Trump may be a sort of Genghis Khan we have not seen for a while. Brown, a recalcitrant warlord. I have seen this movie before. Days are numbered, Mr. Brown.

#4  Grom,

I'm thinking he's going to withhold state funds from those counties and cities until they see the light...and I would bet the house payment that he'll find a court that will back him.up.

#3  The physical conflict and face-off is coming. I don't know when, but it is coming.

Except I think it'll happen when Brown orders California State Police, and maybe even California National Guard, to move on counties that voted against "sanctuary".

#1  Just the crisis and confrontation Moonbeam desires. He'll refuse to mobilize the California Guard and forcefully prohibit the deployment of military forces or reconnaissance aircraft from outside the State of California.

The physical conflict and face-off is coming. I don't know when, but it is coming.
