[WattsUpWithThat] In the May 2000 issue of Reason Magazine, award-winning science correspondent Ronald Bailey wrote an excellent article titled "Earth Day, Then and Now" to provide some historical perspective on the 30th anniversary of Earth Day. In that article, Bailey noted that around the time of the first Earth Day in 1970, and in the years following, there was a "torrent of apocalyptic predictions" and many of those predictions were featured in his Reason article. Well, it’s now the 48th anniversary of Earth Day, and a good time to ask the question again that Bailey asked 18 years ago: How accurate were the predictions made around the time of the first Earth Day in 1970? The answer: "The prophets of doom were not simply wrong, but spectacularly wrong," according to Bailey.

Here are 18 examples of the spectacularly wrong predictions made around 1970 when the "green holy day" (aka Earth Day) started:

#9  A clean environment is a luxury good. It's something wealthy nations obsess with and poor nations couldn't care less bout. They are just trying to feed everyone. So you need a relatively free, market based economy before the environment ever even enters the picture. How ironic that environmentalists are so keen on destroying the very thing that makes them possible.

#8  Ecology is a science. Conservation is just (un)common sense. Environmentalism is anti-human religion.

#6  I think environmentalism is a good thing. But it gets perverted by people in power who use it as cover to transfer our manufacturing to China.

#5  Many of the predictions were about famine, especially in India. Norman Borlaug changed all that. He won the Nobel Peace Prize for it. Look him up on Wikipedia.

I also found it amusing that they were predicting an ice age by 2000.

#3  Also from Earth Day co-founder Ira Reinhorn, who sez - "Don't forget to compost!"

#2  Semi-related - I spotted some TV series (may have been our local communist channel, WGBH (think local PBS)) featuring one of our favorite Alarmists, Bill Nye, the 'Science Guy'. I think he was taking on 'climate deniers' in that episode, and he looks like a dork, so I changed the channel pretty quickly.
