1 killed, 4 wounded in Paris knife attack by man shouting 'Allah Akbar'
2018-05-13
[AlAhram] An assailant shouting "Allah Akbar" killed a passer-by in a knife attack that also maimed four others in the heart of Gay Paree late on Saturday before he was rubbed out by police, French authorities said.

The country has been on high alert amid a series of attacks, commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
Death Eater group, that has killed more than 240 people since 2015.

La Belle France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom," President Emmanuel Macron said after the attack, praising officers for "neutralizing the terrorist."

The first call to police was placed at 8:47 p.m. local time (1847 GMT), officers were on the scene within five minutes, and the attacker was "neutralized" within nine minutes of that first call, Prime Minister Edouard Philippe told news hounds.

Police union representative Rocco Contento told Rooters that the assailant, after attacking bystanders with a knife, rushed at police shouting "I will kill you, I will kill you!"

He was then shot by the officers.

The attack took place in the heart of the French capital in a district popular with tourists for its many restaurants and cafes, landmark retail stores, and the Gay Paree opera.

Prosecutor Francois Molins told news hounds the police's anti-terrorism unit would launch an investigation, given the aggressor's "mode of operation." The identity of the attacker man was not yet known, officials said early on Sunday.

A picture seen by Rooters, which a source said showed the attacker, showed a bare-chested and bearded young man dressed in black trousers.

The Islamic State group grabbed credit via its Amaq news agency, but provided no proof for its claim.

French Interior Minister Gerard Collomb called it an "odious" attack.

Witnesses described for French media how they saw the assailant running towards coppers who shot him.

"We were told to get into a bar quickly. I was curious and went outside again. Outside, I saw a person on the ground about 200 metres from me. The police, fire brigade and ambulance arrived," one female witness told LCI television. "I could not see anything else after that."

Authorities did not immediately reveal the identity of the victim.

TV footage showed forensic police at the scene.

#5  His parents have been taken into custody.

So now they just need the 'girlfriend'/handler. She has probably already returned to Georgia.

That list currently has nearly 20,000 people, of whom about half are under active surveillance.

Maybe a free distribution of 'Macron' phones can aid in tracking.

#4  Update from The Times of Israel:

...was on the so-called “S file” of people suspected of radicalized views who could pose security risks, the sources said, though he did not have a criminal record.

His parents have been taken into custody. Investigators have not yet said when the man arrived in France.

Many but not all of the people on France’s S file (the “S” stands for security) have been involved in the series of deadly jihadist attacks that have killed some 245 people across the country since 2015.

The watch list contains anyone suspected of being a radical, including potentially dangerous religious extremists but also leftist and far-right activists.

A separate list, the File for the Prevention of Terrorist Radicalization (FSPRT), focuses on people judged to be terror threats.

That list currently has nearly 20,000 people, of whom about half are under active surveillance.

It’s good to see that the police killed the jihadi within ten minutes of the first phone call, but the cost to maintain that level of police presence must be very high. It would be cheaper to send all non-citizens on the S and FSPRT lists back to wherever they came from, and do the same after revoking citizenship of those who acquired it after immigrating.

Citizenship was not intended to be a national suicide pact.

#2  Paris attacker born in Chechnya, was on radicalism database
The official said the assailant, born in 1997, had French nationality but was born in the largely Muslim Russian republic of Chechnya, where extremism has long simmered. The official wasn't authorized to be publicly named speaking about an ongoing investigation.

The man had no record of arrests or criminal activity, and didn't know his victims, Interior Ministry spokesman Frederic de Lanouvelle told The Associated Press.

Lutheran, most likely. You know how they are

The "freedom" here is freedom of immigration?
