Novichok 'could have passed through skin'
2018-07-06
[BBC] The nerve agent that poisoned a couple near Salisbury was unlikely to have been left in the open before they touched it, a government scientist has told BBC News.

The Novichok was so toxic it was able to pass through the skin and did not need to be ingested, he added.

Police have said the couple from Amesbury were exposed to the substance after handling a contaminated item.

Charlie Rowley, 45, and Dawn Sturgess, 44, remain critically ill.

Amesbury poisoning: What we know so far

Speaking to BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner, the source said Novichok could be degraded by rainwater and sunlight over time - meaning it was probably discovered by the couple in a contained space.

The source added that Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess's symptoms were the same as those shown by Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia.

They were both poisoned with Novichok in nearby Salisbury in March.

Or that it was fresh. Ya know, I'm starting to warm to the disgruntled employee theory.

#5  They are reportedly both known drug users, the female having lived in a rehabilitation center for drug addicts. Appears they may have stumbled onto some very bad stuff.

No one here would pay them much notice. Little more than typical democrats.

#1  The SUN: What is the latest on their condition?

Doctors determined the pair had been poisoned by toxins and are showing very similar symptoms to the former Russian military intelligence colonel and his daughter Julia.

A pal said the pair were feeling ill and preparing to go to hospital after touching an item in Queen Elizabeth Gardens in Salisbury when they "went into a zombie-like state" and "slumped against the wall".

Defence sources say the couple - who have no connections with Russia or security services - were poisoned and samples have been sent to the Porton Down research facility for urgent testing.

Emphasis added.
