[Khaama (Afghanistan)] At least three NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
soldiers were killed or maimed in an apparent insider attack in western Herat
...a venerable old Persian-speaking city in western Afghanistan, populated mostly by Tadjiks, which is why it's not as blood-soaked as areas controlled by Pashtuns...
province of Afghanistan.

The NATO-led Resolute Support Mission in a statement said the incident took place on Monday.

"A Resolute Support service member was killed in Herat province today," the statement said.

"Two other Resolute Support service members were maimed in the incident. Initial reports indicate the attack was committed by a member of the Afghan cops," NATO added in its statement.

No further details were given regarding the identities of the soldiers killed or maimed in the attack.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Defense of Czech Republic has confirmed that one of its soldiers has been killed and two others have sustained injuries in Herat province.

The statement further added that the incident has taken place in Shindand district of Herat province.

The ministry also added that the maimed soldiers have been taken to Bagram hospital and their injuries are not life-threatening.

#8  Smart young man. He'll have no regrets when he's our age and looks back.

#7  Besoeker, that's his plan.

He did get commissioned relatively late in life (age 31). He spent 4 years in the Marine Corps, got out in 2000, got married, after a few years went back to school and got his commission through AF ROTC.

#6  Crisp salute and hat tip to Captain Tom. He'll no doubt be picked up for Major. Hope he stays on to retirement.

#5  Thanks, Frank and tw. My wife and I are driving down to visit his wife and two kids for Halloween to cheer them up.

Also, he is up for Major in January, and his name is Tom. So we have David Bowie's Space Oddity already queued up (Ground control to Major Tom ...)

#4  Captain? My congratulations and thanks to him, Rambler. And lots of prayers, because those Afghans seem to live on a hair trigger away from exploding on those around them.

#2  This sort of shit scares the crap out of me. My son is a Captain in the Air Force who just started a 6 month deployment in Afghanistan, at a NATO base.

#1  Traumatic amputation is not life-threatening if treated quickly enough. Ending up with an ostomy bag isn't life threatening. Nor is being blind.
So the comfort level isn't what the PIO might be thinking it is.
