‘Peddler’ killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

[NEWAGEBD.NET] A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported shootout with police at Damdamia area under Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar Friday morning, rasing the corpse count in the ongoing anti-drug drive to 257 since May 15.

The dear departed Hamidul Islam allies Lalaya allies Burmaya Lalaya, 35, son of Kala Mia of Ulochamry under Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar, was a Yaba trader in the list prepared by the police and wanted in at least eight cases, mostly for Yaba peddling, the police claimed.

Besides, police and the Rapid Action Battalion conducted anti-drug drives at different places of the country on Wednesday.

New Age correspondent in Cox’s Bazar, quoting Teknaf cop shoppe officer-in-charge Pradip Kumar Das, reported that they, on informed from the locals about a shootout between two groups of drug peddlers at Ulochamry under Teknaf, rushed to the spot at about 5:00am.

He said that the groups, sensing the presence of police, opened fire on the police personnel and the cops also retaliated by firing that triggered a shootout.

As the suspected drug peddlers fled away, they found a bullet-hit body whom locals later identified as Hamidul, he said.

He claimed that they seized two firearms, 10 bullets and 6,000 Yaba tablets from the spot.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police officials said they arrested 42 suspected peddlers and addicts in ant-drug drives at different places of the capital in 24 hours ending Friday 6:00am and seized 758 Yaba tablets, 528 grams of heroin, 450 grams of hemp, 120 ampules of injectable drugs and 200 bottles of Phensedyl from their possession.
